GTA 6 Console Prices & Why the PC Version Is Delayed
Why GTA 6 costs $79.99 across PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S, what to expect on each console, and why the PC release is coming later.
When Rockstar Games confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, it came with two big details about platforms: the game costs the exact same price across all consoles, but the PC version will not be available at launch.
Whether you play on a standard PlayStation 5, the more powerful PS5 Pro, an Xbox Series X, or an Xbox Series S, the game costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Meanwhile, PC players will have to wait roughly 1 to 2 years before the game arrives on PC.
Here is a clear look at how the game runs on each console, and why Rockstar always delays the PC release.
Console Comparison: Performance & Features
Rockstar keeps the price the same across all consoles, but performance varies depending on how powerful your hardware is:
| Console | Price (Standard) | Resolution Target | Framerate Target | Extra Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | $79.99 | 1440p (Upscaled to 4K) | 30 FPS / 40 FPS Balanced Mode | DualSense controller haptics & adaptive triggers |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $79.99 | 1440p–1800p (Upscaled to 4K) | 60 FPS Performance Mode | Enhanced ray-tracing reflections & PSSR upscaling |
| Xbox Series X | $79.99 | 1440p (Upscaled to 4K) | 30 FPS | Quick Resume & Dolby Vision HDR support |
| Xbox Series S | $79.99 | 1080p | 30 FPS | Full game with exact same map, cars, and missions |
| PC (Steam / Rockstar) | TBD (Delayed) | Up to 4K / 8K | Uncapped (120+ FPS) | Ultrawide monitor support, graphics sliders & mods |
PS5 Pro Upgrades Are Completely Free
The PlayStation 5 Pro has a faster graphics chip and AI upscaling called PSSR. Rockstar is including all PS5 Pro visual improvements in a free launch-day update. You do not have to pay any extra fees for enhanced graphics.
How Xbox Series S Runs GTA 6
Some players worried that the smaller Xbox Series S wouldn’t be able to run such a massive game. Rockstar has confirmed that the Series S plays the exact same game, with the same bustling streets and full story, running at 1080p resolution for the standard $79.99 price.
Why the PC Release Is Delayed
Delaying the PC version is a regular practice for Rockstar Games. Looking at past releases shows this pattern clearly:
| Game | Console Release | PC Release | Delay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto 4 | April 2008 (PS3 / Xbox 360) | December 2008 (PC) | ~7 Months |
| Grand Theft Auto 5 | September 2013 (PS3 / Xbox 360) | April 2015 (PC) | ~19 Months |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 2018 (PS4 / Xbox One) | November 2019 (PC) | ~12 Months |
| Grand Theft Auto 6 | November 19, 2026 (PS5 / Xbox Series) | Expected Late 2027 / 2028 | ~12 to 18 Months |
1. Easier to Optimize on Consoles First
Consoles are easy to develop for because every PS5 and Xbox has the exact same parts inside. In contrast, PC gaming involves thousands of combinations of graphics cards, processors, and monitor setups. By focusing 100% of their energy on consoles first, Rockstar can deliver a smooth launch without the performance bugs that often plague big PC game releases.
2. Players Often Buy It Twice
From a business standpoint, this release schedule is very profitable for Rockstar and Take-Two:
- First on Console (Nov 2026): Millions of PC gamers who also own a console buy the game on day one because they don’t want to wait years to play.
- Later on PC (2027/2028): When the PC version finally arrives with ultra-high frame rates, modding support, and ultrawide graphics, many of those same players gladly buy the game a second time.
Can You Transfer Your Purchase Between Platforms?
- No Cross-Buy: If you buy GTA 6 on PlayStation, you do not get a copy on Xbox or PC. Each console requires its own purchase.
- Keep Your Online Progress: Your Rockstar Games Social Club account connects your character across platforms, meaning you should be able to carry your online progress and character over if you switch to PC later.
