Why GTA 6 costs £69.99 in the UK, €79.99 in Europe, and ₹5,999 in India. How local taxes work and why digital codes are region-locked.
When GTA 6 pre-orders launched around the world, players quickly noticed that prices look very different depending on where you live. In the UK, it costs £69.99, in Europe it is €79.99, in India it is ₹5,999, in Australia it is A$119.95, and in the United States it is $79.99.
If you convert those numbers directly into US dollars, it looks like British gamers pay nearly $92 while Indian gamers pay around $71.50.
Why does the same game have different price tags across different countries? Here is how local sales taxes, currency adjustments, and console region locks really work.
Taxes Make the Biggest Difference
The biggest reason prices look so different is how countries handle sales tax on store receipts:

Looking at the UK (£69.99)
At first glance, £69.99 looks like British players are paying about $91.70 USD — nearly $12 more than American players. But by law in the UK, all consumer prices must include the 20% Value Added Tax (VAT).
When you take out that 20% tax, the actual base price is £58.32 (about $76.40 USD). That means Rockstar actually gets slightly less money from a UK copy than from a US copy sold in a state with zero sales tax.
Looking at India (₹5,999)
In India, the ₹5,999 INR price tag includes the country’s mandatory 18% GST tax. When you take out that tax, the base price is about ₹5,084 (around $60.60 USD). Rockstar sets the price slightly lower in India so the game remains accessible to local players relative to average incomes.
Why You Cannot Just Buy from a Cheaper Country
Because converted prices vary between countries, Sony and Microsoft have strict rules to keep players from buying games in cheaper regions:
1. PlayStation Account Region Locks
Sony divides the world into account regions:
- A digital code bought for one country cannot be redeemed on an account from another region.
- Wallet gift cards only work in the currency they were bought in (for example, a US dollar gift card cannot be redeemed on a European account).
2. Xbox Store Region Rules
While Xbox consoles let you switch your console’s country setting, Microsoft requires your credit card and billing address to match that country’s store to make a purchase. Trying to use VPNs to buy games in other countries violates Microsoft’s terms and can get your account banned.
